Week 9: Prototype Testing, Data Collection & Analysis

PLTW Elements H + I — Prototype Testing and Data Collection Plan; Testing, Data Collection, and Analysis.

Second Mentor Meeting: Prototype Review

Early this sprint, demo your working MVP (Element G, Week 8) to your industry mentor.

  • Show it running, not just slides — mentors give sharper feedback on something they can see fail.
  • Ask specifically: what would break this at real-world scale or under real-world conditions?
  • Log the feedback in your Kanban board; it feeds directly into Element J next week.

Define Testing Criteria & Procedure (Element H)

  • Write explicit Testing Criteria: the pass/fail thresholds tied back to your Sprint 1 PRD metrics (e.g. latency < 200ms, accuracy > 90%).
  • Write a repeatable Testing Procedure: exact steps, inputs, and environment needed to run the test the same way twice.

Run Physical Testing & Record Data (Element I)

  • Execute the testing procedure and Record Data — raw numbers, not summaries, so you can re-analyze later.
  • Analyze the data against your testing criteria: which metrics passed, which didn’t, and by how much.

Critical Design Review → Redesign, Refine, Re-test

  • Hold a Critical Design Review (CDR): present your test data to your team (and mentor if possible) and decide what must change before Sprint 3 ends.
  • Redesign and refine the failing areas, then re-test and record the updated results.

Core Deliverables

  • Logged mentor prototype-review feedback.
  • Testing criteria + testing procedure documents.
  • Recorded test data (before and after CDR).
  • CDR notes and re-test results.
